CyPhaCon: Dr. Trek, EIS, STC, Green Girl and my buds!

WOW. Can't believe that CyPhaCon is here already! But yes indeed— I'll see all you Cajuns THIS weekend, again, with a "Dr. Trek" show and a lot of friends in the guest line-up.

Both of the Lake Charles cons have had me almost every year since 2010, and it's a great corner off the Gulf, kinda midway  between Houston and New Orleans along I-10.  Treklander bud Jeff "Shran/Brunt/Weyoun" Combs is just one of the guests to be at Lake Charles with me: Mon capitan Vic Mignogna and fellow McCoy denizen Chuck Huber, my Star Trek Continues consultees, are also in the lineup as STC and anime guests—and I am pledged to help show them the town (or at least the eateries)!

Here's my own schedule— and yes, I'll be talking about the exciting, non-profit Enterprise in Space as well as leading a Trekland forum/panel.  We're starting off bright and "early" both days at 10 a.m., so I want to see you there! Tabling too—with info on all this plus sneak-peeks the next #LA2Vegas Trek Tour for 2016 with ME and Geek Nation Tours.





I'm also pleased to screen my buddy George Pappy's award-winning Susan Oliver bio-doc The Green Girl bigscreen (2:45 pm Saturday, Rosa Hart Theatre) and will have some Green Girl T's and DVDs at the table.

Most of all, it's a chance to bring back my late-night crowdfunder "Dr. Trek Show" fun in support of The Con of Wrath documentary, which we are starting to wrap up after a 2011 start.

Maybe, just two hours from Houston, we'll even find still more Survivors the 1982 Ultimate Fantasy aka "Con of Wrath"!  I'm always on the lookout.

Awww, I miss my Seattle buds: no ECCC for me this year

One of the great joys the past few years here in TREKLAND, as the global genre landscape has evolved, has been getting out to a far wider swath of conventions than in years past—even to the big comic-cons… like Seattle's Emerald City Comic-Con.

And that's why, as some have already asked me, I'm bummed about not being there today as ECCC returns in all its booming, downtown-Seattle glory. I initially had a convention conflict this year, but as it turns out I'm using the break to go check in with my mom who's about on the same latitude as Seattle, over in northwest Montana.

Yeah, ECCC has been a destination for me in various guises ever since 2010—a first dip into a universe where I never saw myself. (I'm not a comics guy, right?)

But ECCC was my first-ever exposure with "tweet-ups" that year—thank you, Shannon and Matt of Seattle Geekly!—as well as the birth in 2012 of what's come to be called our "Dr. Trek Show"—the crowdfunder meetup for "The Con of Wrath." In the process I've watched ECCC explode, catch up with old friends, and grown a whole colony of new Trekland fans and supporters, and my thanks to all—and, yeah, I'm bummed to miss you guys this year at the Six Arms for our last-stand Sunday afterglow tradition. All Trek Seattle has been been a ton of fun AND very supportive as the documentary made micro-budget progress—and more on that coming, too.

Same goes for all my friends and followers in Seattle, and those in and out of ECCC who came by the table when I had one, much less our annual "Trekland: Between the Cracks" and other panels.
So 2015 is a break in my Seattle string. But this year is going to be different overall—fewer cons, and more new work— a lot of hard brainwork development and a continuation of what I started last year... but all for good reason. 

All the more reason why I'm gonna miss being in Seattle this weekend! But, here's to the good times—and a moment from each of our main 2012, 2013 and 2014 meetup groups ... and here's to hoping the big 5-0 anniversary year of 2016 in Trekland gets things back on track.

SoonerCon's always special for me—and now, with Vic!

Another fast con turnaround — no time for posting new vidchats or Trunk offerings, sorry! — but this time it's for the roots.

Yes, it's time for my annual pilgrimmage to SoonerCon — and a few days' visit "back home."

That's why, big or small, nothing compares to my now-annual trip back to OKC and catching up with both fan-friends and everybody else from my first 35 years on this planet... as much as I can! Once again, I want to thank Jerry Wall and Leonard "Confather" Bishop for having me back as a featured guest, even though Trekland is hardly a big chunk of interest there. Anime is growing amid the multi-program tracks that already focus on gaming, guests for a huge art show and authors' panels, live role-play, and a cosplay/costuming track so big it's sponsored by Bernina of OKC. Yep, SoonerCon 23 is emerging from its traditonal lit-con roots to embrace media and continues on the rise since the 2006 re-startup. (By the way, Midwest City is a southeast OKC suburb, minutes from downtown and Bricktown off I-40.)

This year will be fun for me as they have mon capitan Vic Mignogna in as the anime GoH, as SCon grows that track of its programming. Even as, of course, Vic pulls double duty across genres and "helps" me out with the American big-screen debut of Star Trek Continues' Mirror epic, "Fairest of Them All." With luck I'll get him down to Norman for some eats—or at least over to Cattlemen's, eh?

Most of all, I look forward to connecting once again with all the "new", post-90s goings on in Red Dirt Fandom—as I finally realized a few years back that coming to SoonerCon needed to be more than "old home week" for me. There is so much go on in Oklahoma with indie filmmaking and all the new genres repping up—and even in Trek fandom, where newer folks know me only from the Companion, STC, Stellar Cartography and all those podcasts—not so much from the "old days" of ThunderCon, and schlepping my concordance fanzines every year. (I just hope I can also make a run up to Claremore to check in on the Will Rogers Memorial again—it's been a few.)

As for me at SCon, I'll have all things Trekland on hand—including my "Trekland: On Speaker Vol. 2 for "All Good Things", and the latest on "The Con of Wrath"—plus news of my two new non-profit boards I'm spending time on: the Hollywood Sci-Fi Museum, fresh off its "Bureacratic Kickstarter" to amp up sponsors for actual opening, and the looming "Enterprise in Space" real-world orbiter mission, about to kick off in July.

So, hey—if you're in easy driving range of OKC (and that's several states' worth, for a 3-4 hour drive) it's still not too late to get these ridiculously reasonable membership rates and come on down, still. Just better come on down and say "Dr. Trek sent me!"

Phoenix rising!: See you at Comicon—and Todd too!

Whoa! It's been two days back from FedCon and time to turn sights just eastward to Phoenix Comicon, another show that's exploding in size but keeping its fun fan factor feel...and thanks to Matt Solberg and ALL the wonderful volunteer staff for having me back again as a guest.

2013 PHXCC debut of STC and "Pilgrim of Eternity"

No huge Star Trek Continues world debut and cast signing as with last year's amazing moment, but this year Todd "Spock" Haberkorn—the only castmember who had to miss 2013's debut gala—is also a PHXCC con guest and will join me for a screening of "Lolani" on Sunday in the Big Hall, otherwise known as the Valley of the Sun. Sure you've seen it online, but here's a chance to see it big-screen...and yak at us afterwards in Q&A.



On the solo front, I've got four events—plus my Trekland hours at Table 2524.

Blame it on…well, me: A miscue about calendar dates led me to think I was doomed to miss WonderCon 2014, and so ignored submitting panel ideas this year. Too late, I realized my April indeed had room for all … but too late: So, I'll be missing out having a Trekland audience there for the first time since 2011. 

Still, never fear: you can still come have a set-to with me as I have a mini-table spot at the big New Starship/Enterprise-D Bridge Restoration area at Booth 1253, the non-profit whose board I sit on—and is about to expand in scope. Come get your photo op again this year at the large booth island, with a very different surprise background set-up this year—free again!—and Huston Huddleston there by Saturday afternoon, after a split weekend at Salt Lake City Comic-Con ..... AND while there check out what Trekland goodies I have on hand: maps, books, photos. Fellow boardmember Rick Sternbach will be tabling next to me there, too.

Meanwhile, here's a couple of WC Trekland sidebars: my buddy E.J. de la Pena has an exhibit for his DEFIANCE movie at Booth 1227 … while doctors Drea Letamendi and Ali Mattu, who led the Trek v. SWars Psychology panel I sat on last year (left), have the third incarnation with Chase Masterson on the Trek side this time—at 7:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday in Room 213.

 
In fact, I'll be there to support them in the crowd, and afterward will be happy to Pied Piper the Trek folk over to the adjacent Sheraton Anaheim for our next Con of Wrath crowdfunder meetup "Dr. Trek" Show ...roughed-out in the back of the huge main lobby near the shoeshine stand (where we gatehred last year, as at right). NORTH FLORIDA FLASH: A "Con of Wrath" meetup in Jacksonville—THIS Saturday night, March 8!

Things happen fast! Watch out, north Florida/south Georgia:

Just in the last two weeks I've gotten freed up to visit the next Star Trek Continues shoot, so while in the area why *not* bring the "Dr. Trek Show" to Jacksonville, finally, for THE CON OF WRATH as well? 7 pm this SATURDAY, March 8!

It will be our typical laid-back two-hours-plus from the convention circuit, just switched up a bit for a stand-alone format here. Yes, the night is still all about supporting and sharing my documentary project in progress, The Con of Wrath—seen now as the most infamous event in pop culture media fandom, the meltdown-to-miracle of the "Ultimate Fantasy" in Houston, 1982, Star Trek’s first big all-cast arena “rock show.”

And yes, the night is broadly all for Trek fans, indie fans, documentary fans...pop culture buffs of all stripes …

But this night, we are thankful to the Florida State College-JAX campus for hosting our venue… and in deference, the event is free and open to the public for the rare Trek clips, the sneak peeks from the doc so far, and the Q&A tales you can pry out of me. For this occasion, I'll also have a story or two from the new STAR TREK: STELLAR CARTOGRAPHY maps/book set for the Trekademics on hand.

But, as with our usual format, those who also take our live "crowd funding" opportunity of a $20 donation not only get their screen credit, but also a shot at batches of trivia for prizes! And maybe a couple other surprises as well.

I'll also have a small sales table with a few copies of STSC, "Trekland: On Speaker" CDs, and some older items as well.

Trekland in Comic-Con: Lots to see & do amid the mob!

Whoa! Time to go attack another San Diego Comic-Con!

Trekland will be making its usual rounds and appearances across all four days of San Diego Comic-Con—with two sales sittings in Autograph Alley and a Saturday night panel—and of course a meetup for "The Con of Wrath" after our San Diego hootenanny was a hit last year (below). We'll also be moderating the panel for the New Starship Foundation Ent-D restoration and museum with Huston H., and around their huge floor photo-op.

So, check it out—my known whereabouts for San Diego:

FRIDAY:

2:30-7 pm: Autograph Alley Booth 25, 2:30-7 p.m. Trekland CDs, photos and Star Trek Continues goodies: and flea market old 80s movie buttons!

SATURDAY:

2:30-5:30 p.m.: Autograph Alley Booth 25 (ditto of Friday).

5:30-6:20 p.m.: I moderate Huston Huddleston's New Starship Foundation panel on the Enterprise-D bridge restoration museum. Boy has THIS been building from the original exciting yet simple idea we showed you before anyone else did... you have to come hear the latest, and throw some feedback as well.

7:30-8:20 p.m.: OUR Panel: The Con of Wrath update and more—some raw footage, and who knows what else from Trekland (new projects, anyone?). Welcome DP Neal Hallford and our other associates Lex Wochner and Dawn Gagliano, too!

9:30-11:30 p.m.: The "Con of Wrath" benefit meetup: Once again, as we've been doing live at cons across the country: you chip in $20 for a screen credit BUT get two hours live of the Dr. Trek Show!: prize trivia, rare Trek clips and raw doc footage.... and a screen credit, of course. Site in Gaslamp area backroom bar TBD.

I'll also likely try to support the projects of friends like the new version of Trek-vs.Wars psychology debate, the Roddenberry panels and Mission Log podcast, and Marc Zicree's Space Command...to name but a few.

I won't be camped there 24/7, but it's a good bet I'll be around Huston's gye-normous Enterprise-D photo-op spread on the Main Floor at times as well.

It's amazing how much SDCC has changed just since I started going in 2005—or that I feel like a battle-hardened veteran about it all now. I already know I'll be seeing a lot of old friends and maybe even transact some commerce.

So please—any Treklanders in the neighborhood, come by at least once to say hello. AND survive the week. I have slots open ... !
